Xalitla is a town
that is renown for producing paintings on bark paper called amate.
The traditional paper amate paintings merge two craft traditions
of Mexico. Some ancient pottery villages of Balsas River Basin, in the
state of Guerrero, developed, possibly in the 19th century, two styles
of pottery decoration then moved to amate. Due to difficulties
in the economic atmosphere in Mexico, in the late fifties and early sixties
artists began looking for less expensive means of expressing their art
- they found amate paper. This art form has sustained its attraction
for collectors and tourists alike.
